“One coast can be reached from the other step by step, but it is still faster to drive.”
A brilliant music teacher would begin each course by asking students to envision themselves at the end of the year, giving themselves a final grade along with a rationale for it. This simple exercise pushed students to imagine their own brilliance and map out the path to achieve it.
In my experience as a therapist, many people drift through life letting circumstances steer the wheel, rather than taking control themselves. Decisions often happen incrementally, guided by self-imposed limits and a narrow view of what’s possible. Inertia isn’t just a physics concept — it applies to our lives, too.
Think about it: you wouldn’t start driving to an unfamiliar destination without a map or GPS. Yet, so many of us move forward in life without a clear idea of where we want to go. Is it any wonder that stress and a sense of being out of control are so common?
In physics, overcoming inertia requires applying force. In life, that force is clarity: identifying your values and desired destinations, then aligning your decisions and actions accordingly. When things aren’t in alignment, it takes courage to make changes and redirect yourself toward the path that leads to where you truly want to be.
This is where therapy can make a profound difference. As a therapist, my role is to help you uncover those values and destinations — not based on what others expect of you, but based on what you truly want for yourself. Often, the noise of everyday life can cloud our vision. Having a space to be heard, to reflect, and to explore inconsistencies can reveal new possibilities and bring unexpected clarity.
Taking the time to pause, reflect, and set your personal GPS isn’t just a luxury; it’s an investment in your most valuable asset: you. If you feel like life is moving forward without a clear direction, therapy can help you take back the wheel and chart a path that aligns with your deepest values and aspirations. You don’t have to navigate it alone — I’m here to help.
